Dr. Thoman was privileged to be a part of the Medical Mission of Mercy (MMOM) this past February 2018 in Sorsogon Philippines. MMOM is a multi-specialty team made up of general surgeons, dentists, optometrists, family practitioners, otolaryngologists and oral and maxillofacial surgeons. MMOM has been treating poor and underserved patients in the Philippines for over 15 years. This last mission was able to provide services to approximately 1800 individuals in 5 days. Dr Thoman helped with treatment of individuals with cleft lip and palate and other facial diseases. These cases included treatment of cleft palates, lip revisions, bone grafts to alveolar defects along with a mix of removal of hard and soft tissue tumors of the facial region. Dr Thoman was also able to help train otolaryngology residents from Manila and oral and maxillofacial surgery residents from the US. He was accompanied by his wife Dr. Cara Thoman (general dentist) and his 2 daughters.
Dr Cara Thoman helped provide basic dental treatment, and his daughters helped assist for various procedures.
The medical facilities were much different than those found in the US, and the local officials were careful to provide security to provide safety for MMOM team members. As is true of mission trips, the patients greatly appreciated the expertise and the care provided, but those providing the care were equally blessed.
